Tune in to our GHMe song!

By Janet Michel, Lead Program Evaluator, GHMe

Music and dance are integral parts of my culture - Shona. A typical Shona traditional instrument, Mbira symbolizes music as a means of communicating with the ancestors and connecting with the spiritual world.

Janet playing the Shona.

We sing and dance when we are happy, sad, troubled or reflective. As I reflected on the journey GHMe has made since I joined them in early 2018, I felt a sense of joy and pride to have been part of such a visionary team.

The lyrics swelled up in my heart and flowed out together with the melody. I have composed before and when I felt this, I reached for my phone and recorded the lyrics and melody.

To package the lyrics. I chose traditional Shona instruments hosho (rattles) and ngoma (drums). Growing up in Zimbabwe, I watched my grandmothers, mum and aunts sing and dance all the time, at weddings, while harvesting the field, sweeping the yard, carrying water or firewood on their heads. This inspired me greatly. They always had a song in their hearts and as a result, hope and joy was always in endless supply.

Music is an international language that inspires, heals, motivates and binds people from different cultures and backgrounds. With this GHMe song, I hope to bring not only mentors and mentees together, and the GHMe team which is so culturally diverse, together in song and dance as we celebrate the successes achieved so far and plans GHMe has in future! May joy and hope be in abundant supply as GHMe moves forward. GHMe yay yay!!!!

The Lyrics:

Global health Mentorship

What a unique surprise

Global Health mentorship

My life is transformed for good

As a mentor,

As an SYP,

As a member,

As the Director.

Global health Mentorship

What a unique surprise

Global Health mentorship

My life is transformed for good

GHMe yay!

GHMe yay!

GHMe yay!

GHMe yay!
